GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS OF STAINLESS STEEL Stainless Steel 405

This is a ferritic stainless steel with lower corrosion resistance than type 430, for example, and corrosion resistance similar to that of type 410. It has better weldability than type 410.

APPLICATIONS OF STAINLESS STEEL 405
The grade is used for similar applications to other lower chromium ferritics, where mildly corrosive environments are involved.
FORGING STAINLESS STEEL 405
The alloy may be forged in the range 2050/1500ºF (1120/815ºC) and air cooled. The effect of the aluminum addition is to prevent hardening when the material is cooled from elevated temperatures.
HEAT TREATMENT
ANNEALING
Parts should be heated to 1440ºF (780ºC,) soaked and air cooled. Type 405 cannot be hardened by heat treatment.
MACHINABILITY
There will be some chip build up on tools when machining this alloy, as with other ferritic stainless types. The material’s machinability is, however, superior to that of the austenitic types.
WELDABILITY
This alloy is weldable by all normal fusion and resistance methods. The aluminum addition prevents hardening when cooling from welding, hence effects an overall improvement in weldability.
