APPLICATIONS OF STAINLESS STEEL 416
This alloy is recommended for all and any screw machine parts, including fittings, gears, housings, lead screws, shafts, valve bodies, valve stems and valve trim.
FORGING STAINLESS STEEL 416
This alloy may be forged but is not recommended for upsetting operations. Heat uniformly to 2100/2250ºF (1150/1230ºC), forge and air cool. Large forgings should be cooled in dry lime or ashes. The alloy should not be forged below 1700ºF (925ºC.)
HEAT TREATMENT
ANNEALING
Heat uniformly to 1200/1400ºF (650/760ºC), soak and air cool.
HARDENING
Heat to 1800/1900ºF (980/1040ºC), soak for about 30 minutes and oil quench.
TEMPERING
Temper at a temperature to give desired mechanical properties. Unless required for reasons of mechanical properties, the alloy is best not tempered between 750 and 1050ºF (400/565ºC) as both impact strength and corrosion resistance will be somewhat reduced.
MACHINABILITY
When used in automatic screw machines type 416, as a result of the sulfur addition, machines as AISI C1117.
WELDABILITY
The alloy should not be considered for applications involving welding – again because of the sulfur addition.
